Film Schools in L.A.: Study Film Where It All Started
It's impossible to think about the film industry without thinking about Los Angeles—or, specifically, Hollywood. Although the entertainment industry is a major economic factor in many other metropolitan areas in the U.S., L.A. is the city that springs to mind as the home of American film and television production, which makes attending film schools in L.A. very appealing.
It was nearly a hundred years ago—1911—that the first Los Angeles film studio was founded, and the annual Oscars presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are a constant reminder that Hollywood is still the heart of America's movie scene.
L.A.'s the place to be for film, and the official numbers back it up. According to a 2006 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 6 out of every 10 jobs in motion picture and video production are located in Los Angeles. When you add together the number of people employed in film production and distribution, video production, post-production services, and television production, it adds up to well over 260,000 people. It's no wonder that aspiring moviemakers often turn to film schools in L.A. for the training they need to make it in this competitive field.
Not surprisingly, film schools in L.A. are plentiful, and include prestigious four-year and graduate programs at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts; the UCLA School of Film, Theater, and Television; and at multiple California State University campuses in the area. Associate's degree programs in film are also available, at schools such as Los Angeles City College, Orange Coast College and the Art Institute of California in Hollywood.
For people with an interest in digital filmmaking or visual effects, Mt. Sierra College is one of the film schools in L.A. offering a Bachelor's-level program in Visual Effects and Digital Video. The foundational curriculum in design and technology prepares graduates for entry-level positions in television, film, the Internet, and other media outlets that utilize digital video technology. More than ever, digital sound and video are a fundamental and invaluable feature of modern film and television production, and Los Angeles provides a multitude of options for motivated film school students.
