NYU Film School Student Receives Award
The Directors Guild of America, a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to preserving the creative and economic rights of film and television production professionals, announced the results of its 15th Annual Student Film Awards in early November. Each year, prizes are awarded to African-American, Asian-American, Latino and women filmmakers who are enrolled in a qualified film school or are recent graduates. The goal, according to the DGA's website, is "to honor, encourage and bring attention to outstanding minority and women film students in film schools and other select universities." Winners receive prizes of $2,500.
The DGA presented students with their awards at screenings in Los Angeles and New York. This year's winning group included students from a diverse crop of well-known film schools, including UCLA, Columbia University, and Chapman University. The East Coast Winner among African American filmmakers was Rashaad Ernesto Green of NYU Film School for his film "Premature," which has received awards at eleven different film festivals. Green, a grad student at NYU Film School, is a good example of the type of talented up-and-coming filmmaker the DGA wants to encourage—one of his short films, "Choices," was screened at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and he's already made a name for himself as an "exciting new voice" in black cinema.
In past years, NYU Film School in particular has proven to be well-represented among award winners, along with USC, UCLA, Florida State University, and American Film Institute. However, any accredited post-secondary school in California or other university with a DGA-approved film or television degree is eligible, as long as the film was made as a student project during the preceding school year. Winners are selected by a blue-ribbon panel of DGA members, making this an exciting opportunity for students to get their work in front of experienced film industry professionals.
