The Los Angeles Film Scene
Los Angeles Film Scene
Hollywood, CA is synonymous with film. As part of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood draws hopeful film industry workers and tourists alike from all over the globe.
Originally, the movie industry was driven to the West Coast by the strict limitations placed on filmmakers by Thomas Edison's monopoly known as "the Trust." The physical distance between California and the East Coast-based Trust allowed filmmakers freedom they wouldn't have had otherwise. However, this was not the only advantage. With its sunshine and wide array of desirable film locations, California was an ideal home for the fledgling U.S. film industry.
Since the establishment of the first Los Angeles film studio in 1911, Hollywood has continued to cement its position at the center of U.S. film. Hollywood is more than a geographic location. It's a concept—one that has inspired both imitators and admirers around the world.
In spite of worries about increased competition by filming hot spots such as New York and Vancouver, BC, the Los Angeles film industry is still thriving, providing more than 200,000 jobs in Los Angeles County. The industry also adds more than $25 billion a year to the economy, according to a 2006 article in the Los Angeles times. With statistics like these, it appears that the Los Angeles film community will remain a major player in the film industry for a long time to come.
