The objective of the Graphic Design program is to train students
in the areas of design, illustration and digital and multimedia
preparation of printed and electronic materials in order to
obtain an entry-level position in the graphic art field.
Potential employment may include layout artist, designer,
production artist, assistant art director or junior designer.
Students will be introduced to basic drawing and composition
skills that are essential to design layout, computer graphics
presentation and production of portfolio-quality projects. In
addition, students will expand their conceptual and artistic
talents, obtain a basic understanding of marketing principles and
business ethics, and improve their communication and
interpersonal skills.

According to the Department of Labor, employment of photographers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014.* What's more, as the population grows, the demand for portrait photographers should increase as well. Growth of Internet versions of magazines, journals, and newspapers also will require increasing numbers of commercial photographers to provide digital images. OIP&T offers instruction in various specialty areas leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Photographic Technology. The photography curriculum is designed to provide you with varied levels of hands-on training required for success in today's competitive job market. You have the flexibility to study one specific field of photography, or to diversify by choosing general applied photography.
Specializations include:
Commercial Photography
Students selecting this specialty will receive training in
camera and darkroom techniques, specializing in studio and
location photography of merchandise, facilities and other
subjects for promotional advertising. Courses include the use
of both small and large format cameras using black and white
and color material as well as training in digital photography.
Graduates in this specialty will be prepared for entry-level
positions in the field of commercial photography. Two to five
years of work experience is recommended prior to opening a
studio.
General Applied Photography
Students in this specialty receive training in the basic
fundamentals of a wide variety of photographic fields. The
objective of this training is to provide the student with the
skills necessary for entry-level positions in full service
studios or photography labs. This specialty also provides the
basis for possible specialized training in the following
specific fields:
- Portrait Photography
- Biomedical Photography
- Commercial Photography
Portrait Photography
Portrait techniques in camera operation, processing, finishing,
merchandising and business practices are emphasized in this
specialty. Both black and white and color materials will be
covered, as well as digital photography applications. Course
work concentrates on current professional trends in studio,
location and candid wedding applications. Graduates in this
specialty will be prepared for entry-level positions in the
field of portraiture. Two to five years of work experience is
recommended prior to opening a studio.
