National University is the second-largest, accredited, private, nonprofit institution of higher learning in California with the third largest graduate program in the country. Founded in 1971, National consists of five schools and one college, including the Schools of Business and Management; Education; Engineering and Technology; Health and Human Services; and Media and Communications; and the College of Letters and Sciences.

Degree programs in the Department of Arts and Humanities cover a broad range of creative expression and thought, both past and present, in languages and literature, the visual arts, drama, music, philosophy and the classics.

Faculty and students in the arts and humanities include not only scholars, critics, and historians of culture and the arts, but also creative writers, musicians and artists.

Bachelor's - Multimedia Arts

The Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Arts consists of courses that prepare the student for a broad range of positions requiring a background in computer multimedia design theory, production and project management. Students receive hands-on training in leading multimedia software applications, while they learn and apply multimedia development theory and practice for online delivery as well as CD-ROM and DVD production.

Graduates of the program are in high demand because they possess a combination of skills and knowledge vital to today's workplace. Since modern enterprises are continuously expanding their media activities across a variety of digital platforms, graduates with a broad range of skills and knowledge of multimedia development practices will be in high demand. Positions in marketing, business, publishing, government, education and training include web designer/developer, graphic designer, project manager and multimedia specialist.

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing offers students the opportunity to master advanced skills in the areas of fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction or screenwriting. Guided development of each writer's talents culminates in a final project, a publishable-quality thesis in one area of specialty. This program is excellent preparation for a professional career in writing, working in the areas of publishing or filmmaking, and is the minimal academic qualification appropriate for those who desire to teach writing at the college or university level. Faculty are experienced and published writers in their fields. Classes meet one evening per week from 5:30-10pm.

The Master of Fine Arts in Digital Cinema (MFA-DC) provides graduates with a foundation in film history and theory and in-depth study of digital motion picture production and post-production. The program focuses on developing well-round filmmakers versed in all aspects of film production and screenwriting with the ability to work on low budget, independent and documentary style filmmaking. Students produce a professional digital cinema portfolio tailored to the student's interests, needs and desire for self-development.

The program prepares graduates to work in a variety of production capacities in the following fields: commercial or industrial film and television, digital entertainment media, and communication, educational or instructional media production. The goal of the program is to develop both the critical acumen and technical abilities of students in the area of visual communication and media.
